About

Campus Planning and Resource Management (CPRM) at The University of Alabama is dedicated to ensuring that the physical campus evolves in alignment with the institution’s strategic goals. Through utility planning, facility assessments, landscape design, accessibility improvements, and geospatial data management, CPRM enhances operational efficiency, sustainability, and campus functionality. By fostering effective communication with stakeholders and embracing innovation, the department ensures that campus development remains responsive to the University’s evolving needs.

A core function of CPRM is the Facility Condition Assessment (FCA) Program, which utilizes a dynamic database to provide comprehensive project-level analysis. This program integrates space inventory data with work-order management, assessing operational risks, usage intensity, and maintenance costs. Updated daily, this resource informs capital reinvestment strategies and helps guide decisions on facility maintenance and divestment.

The Utility and Infrastructure Planning team optimizes the University’s capital planning and campus growth initiatives. Through infrastructure resiliency assessments, construction project reviews, and coordination with infrastructure partners, this team ensures that capital renewal efforts support long-term campus sustainability. Their role also includes interpreting construction documents to maintain efficiency in utility planning.

CPRM’s Campus Planning and Landscapes team plays a crucial role in shaping the University’s outdoor environment. Landscape architects design and maintain parks, streetscapes, trails, and plazas, promoting sustainability and enhancing campus aesthetics. Additionally, the team works on wayfinding improvements and collaborates with Grounds Management to implement best practices in landscaping and urban forest conservation.

Ensuring accessibility is a priority within CPRM, and the ADA Building Assessment team proactively identifies and addresses barriers to compliance. By conducting self-assessments and developing an ADA transition plan, this team works to enhance inclusivity and prevent costly retroactive modifications, improving the campus experience for individuals with disabilities.

The Campus Mapping and Surveying team supports campus operations through advanced geospatial data management. The program manager oversees database management, web mapping, and geospatial analysis, ensuring that mapping and surveying efforts align with campus planning needs. The GIS manager also plays a critical role in managing geographic information system (GIS) applications, collaborating with departments to support compliance and data-driven decision-making.

Through these integrated efforts, CPRM supports the University’s mission by fostering a well-planned, accessible, and sustainable campus. By leveraging technology, strategic planning, and interdisciplinary collaboration, the department ensures that campus infrastructure and landscapes remain adaptable and aligned with institutional objectives.
